All You Need to Know About Side Steps
As a short man who owns a big truck, getting in and out of it was difficult until I found out I can install side steps. Choosing to buy them was one of the best decisions I’ve made concerning my truck, as with a simple purchase I merged together functionality with personal customization and style. Finding the right side steps for sale is relatively easy, there are just a few considerations to bear in mind before doing so.
In this guide, I’ll help you understand the difference between running boards and traditional side steps, and the important considerations regarding them, such as style, length and weight capacity. Running boards and traditional side steps serve the same purpose – to help people get into lifted vehicles while enhancing their exterior look as well.
Traditional Side Steps
The most basic option when it comes to side steps are the traditional side steps. Before you start looking for traditional side steps for sale, note that they’re less conspicuous and smaller than running boards. As such, they’re also the less expensive option out of the two as well as easier to install. However, they’re more versatile and generally located under the driver and passenger’s side doors. They can also be added to the rear end to provide easier access to the pickup bed.
Running Boards
Running boards are the more dramatic option. They’re loosely defined as narrow steps which fit under the doors of a truck. They first appeared on classic cars that were higher off the ground than the models we see today. There are several types popular today, including: molded running boards, standard running boards, stainless steel and aluminium running boards, lighted running boards and automatic running boards.
Length
Traditional side steps only come in one size, so you don’t have to worry about this at all. Running boards on the other hand, come in two different lengths. The shorter types usually allow access to the front and passenger seats, while the longer models allow access to the bed of the truck as well. So if you’re frequently hauling or storing items in the truck’s bed, you might want to go for the longer type.
Weight Capacity
The weight capacity that your running board or side steps can tolerate is of great importance. Most can withstand up to 150 kg without a problem. However, frequent use means that you probably need to go slightly above that. There are side steps and boards designed to withstand up to 300 kgs and possibly more.
