The Advantages of Motorbike Storage Boxes
One of the biggest disadvantages when traveling long-distance with a motorcycle is the fact that there isn’t enough storage space for all of your stuff. One of the best solutions to this problem is getting a top storage box, which is typically placed either on the sides or on the back of your bike and has enough space for all the essential gear. A lot of people are not really fond of top boxes as they feel they ruin the aesthetics of the bike. However, in my opinion, the practicality and convenience of top boxes are well worth it, and I actually prefer using them over soft and dry luggage like bags and panniers.
The main advantages of a motorbike storage box over panniers and tank bags are the facts that they don’t add width to the bike, have less wind drag, are waterproof, are easy to put on and take off, provide optimum protection for all of your equipment, are lockable, can be used as a backrest, you can strap other items on top of them, and they double as a travel sink. However, a motorbike storage box also has some disadvantages. For instance, it may have an impact on your balance if it’s heavily loaded, and it may impact handling. But the advantages of it far outweigh the disadvantages.
It’s important that you get a box that’s big enough to fit your helmet, jacket and a few other essentials that you can’t do without. For most riders, this equals to about 32 litres (box capacity is measured in litres), while if you travel with a passenger most of the time, you might want to consider a box that has a capacity of about 50 litres. Furthermore, get a box that has a round shape and can store a variety of items without a problem.
As aforementioned, one of the advantages of top boxes is that they can be locked safely, giving you a peace of mind that all of your possessions are safe when you’re away from your bike. However, even then, most top boxes can be stolen with the simple use of a screwdriver. There’s nothing you can really do about this, as if someone is keen on stealing your possessions, they’ll do so no matter what.
That being said, top boxes are an incredibly valuable investment that won’t break your bank, yet will give you a lot of extra comfort and storage while traveling on your bike. They’re rather easy to fit and install, and they typically come with a fitting kit to help you with that.
